TI: Officials should declare assets

The Star

KUALA LUMPUR: Civil servants, including ministers, should make a public declaration of their assets, said the Transparency International (TI) Malaysian chapter.

In a press release, TI said that public perception of integrity and accountability were vital and thus the present practice of ministers declaring assets to the Prime Minister was not enough.

TI also said that for the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) to win public trust as an independent commission, it should be answerable only to Parliament.

It said this way, the ACA would be free to investigate complaints against public and private officials without any perceived intrusion from the Government.

It also urged the public not to vote for public officials who were perceived to be corrupt.
