Wanted – more than 5,000 doctors

The STar

THE country continues to face an acute shortage of doctors, China Press reported.

It quoted Health Ministry parliamentary secretary Datuk Lee Kah Choon as saying that the country needed 5,743 doctors to achieve the ratio of one doctor to 600 patients.

In order to solve this problem, the ministry would ensure that all students pursuing medicine on government scholarships overseas were posted to government hospitals when they returned, he said.

The Government would also take steps to encourage those who pursued medicine overseas on their own to fill the gap, he said.
